Hello
About Phil
I’m Phil, based in White Rock, BC. Aside from family, my favorite things in life are travelling , fishing, good food and being on the water. Sometimes , a lot of good stories come from airports, docks, and the business end of a fishing line. GATE47 is where I put those moments — the funny ones, the chaotic ones, and the ones that stick.
My Story
I’ve always been drawn to the places where things begin — the gate at an airport, the ramp at a marina, or the stretch of water where you drop a line and wait to see what shows up. Those spots have a certain energy, and most of my stories come from those edges.
Some of that started early. When my kids were little, we’d sit by the fence at the airport and watch planes come and go. It was a simple thing, but it stuck. My oldest is now a real enthusiast — he loves MS Flight Sim for the way it recreates places we’ve actually been, right down to the coastline, the approach paths, and the feel of flying into YVR from a pilot’s perspective. He goes a step further by listening to tower traffic and learning the patterns, and watching him move between the real and virtual versions of flight reminded me how those small moments — a fence, a runway, a familiar stretch of scenery on a screen — end up shaping what we pay attention to.
I’ve spent a lot of time around travel and the coast — airports, ferries, marinas, and a summer guiding in my own boat. That taught me to read conditions, stay calm, and pay attention — the same habits that help on travel days when things go sideways.
Fishing has its own rhythm, and anyone who’s spent time on the water knows the truth: the real action happens at the terminal tackle — the business end of the line where everything comes together. Travel feels the same way. You can plan all you want, but the story usually happens where the trip meets real life: the gate change, the weather shift, the delay, the good meal, the bad one, the people you meet, or the moment you didn’t expect.
Most of what I write comes from those places — flights, food, fishing runs, and the days that don’t go the way you thought they would. Nothing polished. Just the real stuff from the road, the water, and the air.
GATE47 is where all of that lands. A mix of flight, food, fishing, and the stories that happen at the business end of the journey.
